W. Tyler Smith ‘62
Tyler Smith was born in Providence, RI to Josephine Smith. He attended St. Augustine School until the eighth grade. While attending La Salle, Brother Joseph saw and appreciated Tyler’s many talents and encouraged him to pursue a career in art. Tyler went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design from which he graduated in 1966. Tyler then began a distinguished career in visual branding, communications, and design, working primarily for the fashion industry. His clients included Joseph Aboud, The Gap, as well as several Italian menswear designers.
Tyler is a lifelong philatelist. In 1984 he designed the Health Research stamp for the US Postal Service. In the same year, he was named Rhode Island School of Design's Alumnus of the Year. The award winning "wave" license plate for Rhode Island was created under his direction.
Most recently, Tyler served as the art director for the logo and the commemorative book celebrating La Salle's 150th anniversary. He is a supporter and former mentor of the San Miguel School in Providence.
Tyler recalls that his time at La Salle gave him “an environment of learning and focus that included a spiritual outlook to living a good life.”
Tyler and his wife Dr. Jean Smith reside in Tiverton, Rhode Island and are the parents of Dr. Tyler Smith and Mr. Ezra Smith.
La Salle Academy is a high school rich in history and grounded in the person and teachings of Jesus and the Catholic faith, which are core to the school's life and culture. The De La Salle Middle School provides a strong holistic foundation for students to transition into high school. The high school and middle school provide students of diverse ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds, a community to foster growth in the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle’s ideals of faith, service, and community.
