LASALLIAN YOUTH ATTEND DISTRICT SUMMER ASSEMBLY

“BORDERS? I’ve never seen one. But I have heard that they exist in some people’s minds.”
Thor Heyerdahl
During the week of July 15 a group of 5 Lasallian Youth members from La Salle Academy, accompanied by a teacher, attended the annual Lasallian Youth Summer Assembly 2018 with the theme of “Lasallians Without Limits: Generation Hope,” hosted this year by Manhattan College in the Bronx, NY.  Sponsored by the District of Eastern North America there were some 125 Lasallian Youth attendees from 15 Lasallian ministries, 5 states and DC, and 4 countries! The event began with a kick-off video as well as the group from France celebrating the victory of their soccer (football) team in the World Cup! Students engaged in ice-breaking and community building activities; prayed, reflected and shared together; listened to presentations about vocation, environmental service, and immigration; and, performed two days of service, including working at the Van Cortland Community Gardens in the Bronx and at the New Jersey Food Bank where the Lasallian Youth set a one-day record for foodstuffs boxed. Students also enjoyed a day of community sight-seeing in NYC!

Attending the Summer Assembly were: Seth Hajian (Science teacher), Brandon Assi, Brooke Cairrao, Ethan Fowler, Anjali Subramanian, and Evan Turgeon.

In addition La Salle Religion Department Chair, Deacon Greg Albanese, was present on the first day of the Assembly to provide input to the group and to get them ready for service by offering words and an activity about the pressures (positive and negative) facing young people today..

“Today I start the change I want to see. Even if I'm not the light I can be the spark in faith, service, and communion. Let us start the change we want to see. The change that begins in me.” (Prayer Service)
