The La Salle Girls Ice Hockey team won their third Rhode Island State Championship in the past four years by defeating the South County Co-op team 5-2 Saturday night at Brown University's Meehan Auditorium. The girls took game one Friday night 3-2. Senior Michaela McNamara was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

On Friday night, McNamara scored a goal with five minutes remaining to put the Lady Rams on top 3-2. It was her second goal of the night. Arianna Boscia scored the other one. Victoria Hartley earned the win in net.

On Saturday, the South County Storm came out fired up and took the early lead. It wouldn't hold up. Maleah Gillette scored the tying goal off assists from Jamie Comeau and Cailin Catarina. Boscia set McNamara up three minutes later to give La Salle the lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Less than a minute into the second period, Alison Altshuler found the back of the net with assists again coming from Comeau and Catarina. If there was any doubt, Catarina settled the issue with two beautiful goals. The first was set up by Boscia and McNamara. Catarina took McNamara's pass to the left slot and one-timed it into the net. With less than five minutes to go in the second period, Boscia again found Catarina to give the Lady Rams a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Storm would not go quietly though, as they picked up a goal four minutes into the third. But with Hartley making several big saves, and Emily Coughlin controlling things from the back as she has done for four years, it was just a matter of time before they would hoist another championship trophy. Amanda Blackmar came up big again from the back, and Allie Bernier was huge in helping to kill off a couple of Storm power plays that could have helped them back into the game.

For Coughlin, McNamara, Catarina, Blackmar, Bernier, and Tessa Fielding, the feeling of going out on top must be overwhelming. The La Salle Girls Ice Hockey team had won a couple of Divison II titles, but had not won the state title until their freshman year. To make the finals all four years, and to take home the championship trophy in three of those years is quite a legacy.
