Members of La Salle Academy’s SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) group certainly have a lot to be proud of. Under the direction of Miss Nicole Brown and Mr. Greg Albanese, the group has accomplished two major feats: a highly successful benefit dinner and an award at the annual MADD Mocktail Competition.
The SADD group adopts a victim of drunk driving each year at a summer conference sponsored by MADD Rhode Island. This year La Salle was privileged to receive two victims: Kimberly Barbera and Dora Mastracchio. Kimberly was only 20 when she was killed in a motorcycle accident; the driver of the bike was drunk. Dora was 95 years old when she was killed along Ocean Road in Narragansett by a drunk driver.

The SADD group reaches out to the families of these victims and stands in solidarity with them. A benefit dinner dance in honor of the victims was held recently at the Village Haven restaurant in North Smithfield. More than 200 people attended and the event raised $1050 for MADD Rhode Island.
Every year 26 schools create a “Mocktail,” a drink without alcohol. A theme and presentation are then formed around the drink and celebrity judges determine the winners. This year’s event was held at Amica insurance in Lincoln and LaSalle won the award as “People’s Choice.”
In addition to these two events, the La Salle SADD group has been active with Red Ribbon Week in the fall and Prom Promise Week which be commemorated April 23-27. These thoughtful students continue to raise the awareness of the dangers of destructive decisions in our community. Well done, La Salle SADD!
