Reflections

It feels like just yesterday I heard the words “Saint John Baptist De LaSalle, Pray For Us, Live Jesus in Our Hearts, Forever” As I sat in a desk that was then unfamiliar, a desk that has now become a haven, I remember the fear that overtook me, the pure fear that made me shake. I was nervous, as nervous as anyone would be when they felt like their future was on the line, when they were testing to be accepted into the opportunity of a lifetime. In every room, hung a small depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus, our Brother, our Savior. Every time I doubted myself or my accomplishments, I just glanced at that crucifixion as a reminder that I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t alone, I had God. With His guidance and support, I knew I could accomplish my highest dreams and aspirations. I knew throughout the past two years, through triumph and turmoil, He has never left me.

The Door

The opening of a door,

Signals a beginning,

That helped shape who we are

Each and every thing had a purpose

Each time that we were pushed to the edge

We found our way back

We have stopped measuring the moments

And reliving old memories

We know now what to expect

Then suddenly

When it seems like we just got used to it

The door starts to close

Our time here must end

No more time to finish up

Or lend a helping hand

We must make room for the new ones

Who are filling our spots

As PEGS, we have been gifted with intelligence and talent. We have received the best education – classroom instruction, filed trips, exhibitions, research projects, debate sessions, movie making classes, and the list goes on.

We have been taught by teachers who cared about our learning and were always there to support us; they hung in there for us; they helped and encouraged us. We are a community – teachers and learners together, sharing common goals, building relationships, and enjoying each other’s presence.

Doors

One door opens and another closes on the path that is life.

We get off course and get back on track but sometimes the real world isn’t like that.

At times many doors can open when only one closes,

But you don’t know which one to choose,

But out of all the doors that are open,

You chose the one that leads to the real you.

Each day in PEGASUS, we would wander about, scattering from classroom to classroom, known as the “Pegasites.” However, rarely people notice the pictures and text that are hung onto our blue walls. One wooden piece has especially stood out to me. It is painted green with the words, “Enter as strangers, leave as friends.” My fellow classmates, that is exactly what we are doing here today. In August of 2008, we were all strangers for the most part. We have transformed into new people. We have truly stood by PEGASUS in “loving to learn and learning to love.” Through our bonds, memories, and experiences, we have formed irreplaceable friendships with the people sitting here in this room. At camp, at Mystic, and on our field trips, we will each remember something specific that has truly touched us here in PEGASUS.

Back
La Salle Academy is a high school rich in history and grounded in the person and teachings of Jesus and the Catholic faith, which are core to the school's life and culture. The De La Salle Middle School provides a strong holistic foundation for students to transition into high school. The high school and middle school provide students of diverse ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds, a community to foster growth in the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle’s ideals of faith, service, and community.
