La Salle Academy Plays Key Role as Lasallian Educators Gather in St. Louis

Lasallian educators throughout the country will gather from November 20 to 22 in St. Louis, Missouri, for the annual Huether Lasallian Conference and several La Salle Academy faculty and staff are in a number of leadership roles at the conference as well as the Pre-Conference Gathering of Young Lasallians.

Brother Frederick Mueller, FSC is being honored as the Distinguished Lasallian Educator of the Year for the Long Island – New England district and is also the keynote speaker for the Lasallian Youth Moderator Pre-Conference.  La Salle Academy Director of Campus Ministry Maryann Donohue-Lynch and Director of Academic Support and architecture teacher Gregg DeMaria, are serving as the coordinators of the Opening Prayer Service and both served on the Huether Planning Committee.

Ms. Donohue-Lynch also serves as the Chair of the Pre-Conference.  Other La Salle Academy faculty and staff engaged in the conference either as conference committee members or as presenters are:

Fine Arts Teacher Elissa Cerros served on the Pre-Conference Planning Committee and will give a presentation, “An Immigrant’s Tale:  Global Learning through Immigration Impact Exploration”

English Teacher Caitlin Krause will present, “Verse as Platform:  Increasing Global Awareness through Poetry Studies”

Social Studies Teachers Kristine Chapman and Mark Carty will present, “Global Anti-Poverty Initiative within Schools:  A Collaborative Approach to Eradicating Poverty”

Director of Academic Support and Architecture Teacher Gregg DeMaria will present, "Environmental Sustainability in Our Schools:  New Innovations and Practical Strategies"

Kevin Regan will present: “The Habit of Listening Fanning into Flame the Gift of God:  The Call of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and Global Climate Change”

A highlight of the conference is the participation of Lasallians from other parts of the world in the opening day prayer service which will be led by Superior General Brother Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria from Rome, Italy. Joining in the service via live synchronous video conferencing are Bethlehem University in Palestine, Universidad LaSalle in Mexico, Christ the Teacher Institute of Education in Kenya; and De La Salle University in the Philippines.

Keynote addresses will be delivered by world-renowned speakers Reverend Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, MM, president of the United Nations General Assembly 63rd Session; Reverend Drew Christiansen, S.J., editor-in-Chief of America magazine; and Dr. Eboo Patel, founder and director of Interfaith Youth Core. The conference offers participants 42 breakout sessions on a wide range of topics about global education and social justice. 

The conference will conclude with the traditional Distinguished Lasallian Educator Awards Dinner honoring this year's awardees.   In addition to Brother Frederick, those being honored are: Mr. Christopher Barczak of Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore, Maryland; Mr. James Shannon of Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee; Mr. Frank Sferra of Mullen High School in Denver, Colorado; Dr. Karen Nicholson of Manhattan College in Bronx, New York; and Mr. Michael Richards of San Miguel High School in Tucson, Arizona.

Now on its 35th-year, the Huether Lasallian Conference has become the cornerstone of Lasallian educational formation, bringing together the largest gathering of educators from 100 Lasallian institutions in the United States to explore emerging educational issues and themes related to formation for mission and Lasallian spirituality. This annual gathering is sponsored by the Regional Office of the Brothers of the Christian Schools which is based in Washington, DC.
