Kristin Pono Sousa '91

Kristin is the Rhode Island Medicaid Program Director at the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services, bringing over 25 years of experience in healthcare management and public service to her role. In collaboration with the Secretary of the Executive Office, she plays a pivotal role in advancing the RI Medicaid Program, ensuring that essential services are both effective and responsive to the needs of the community.

Specializing in healthcare delivery, procurement, and contract management, Kristin has established herself as a leader in the integration and coordination of publicly financed healthcare services across state agencies. She shapes Medicaid policy, interprets state and federal regulations, and provides informed recommendations to enhance program effectiveness. Known for her advocacy on behalf of vulnerable populations, Kristin ensures adherence to federal and state requirements while managing the Medicaid Program within budget constraints and upholding the highest standards of evidence-based healthcare.

Kristin’s dedication to improving the lives of Rhode Islanders has earned her widespread respect as a thoughtful, trustworthy, and committed leader. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she treasures her family life. She is married to Richard, a schoolteacher and coach in Central Falls, and they are proud parents of their son, Benjamin, a University of Notre Dame graduate. Their family also includes three beloved pets: Bruin, Finley, and Humphrey.

Outside of work, Kristin enjoys traveling, reading, and cheering on her favorite Boston sports teams. Her passion for public service and her unwavering commitment to family and community reflect the values she embodies every day, making her an inspiring figure in both her professional and personal life.
