Msgr. Albert Kenney

Monsignor Albert A. Kenney currently serves as Diocesan Administrator for the Diocese of Providence, overseeing its operations during the transition to new episcopal leadership. Over his 30-year priesthood, Monsignor Kenney has distinguished himself through pastoral care, spiritual leadership, and dedication to Catholic education.

Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, to Robert and Alba (Spinale) Kenney, he was educated at Bedford High School and Providence College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance. He completed his seminary formation at Our Lady of Providence, studying philosophy at Providence College and earning a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome. He also received priestly formation at the Pontifical North American College and was ordained at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence on September 3, 1994. Monsignor Kenney later earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) in Rome.

Monsignor Kenney’s decades-long partnership with La Salle Academy began in 1989 when he first taught math at the school. In 1997, as chaplain, he reintroduced school-wide liturgies, spearheaded class retreats, coordinated rosary devotions, and offered confessions and other devotions during Lent. Over 13 years as chaplain, he moderated multiple athletic teams, supported Fine Arts programs, founded the “Grief Group” for students who lost a parent, and provided mentorship for students navigating family challenges. He officiated over 145 weddings for La Salle alumni and baptized many children, while also offering prayers and pastoral care during times of loss.

Monsignor Kenney has also held numerous diocesan leadership roles, including Vicar General, Moderator of the Curia, multiple appointments to the Council of Priests and College of Consultors, and interim Superintendent for Catholic Schools. He serves on boards such as the Catholic Foundation of Rhode Island and the Advisory Board for the Protection of Children and Young People. He has been Chaplain at Wyatt Detention Center and to the Rhode Island State Police Command Staff for over a decade. In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named him Chaplain of His Holiness, granting him the title of Monsignor.

His pastoral service extends to multiple parishes, including Immaculate Conception, Holy Apostles, St. Luke, and St. James Chapel in Charlestown. Monsignor Kenney’s decades of devotion, leadership, and compassionate ministry have left an enduring impact on the Diocese of Providence and the La Salle Academy community, where he nurtured the faith and lives of countless students, families, and parishioners.
