LA SALLE GIRLS SWIM TO FIFTH STRAIGHT RIIL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The La Salle Girls Swimming team made it five RIIL State Championships in a row with their dominating performance Saturday at the University of Rhode Island. The team had lost two dual meets during the regular season, their first losses in five years, and some people were thinking that it might be someone else's year. But Coach Jeff Lenihan kept saying, "wait until the states," and the girls responded with another championship performance. Georgie Pettibone won two individual titles, and La Salle took two relay titles to score 307 points to easily outdistance second place North Kingstown High School's 232 points.

Pettibone won the 200 Individual Medley in a time of 2:10.01, and the 100 Breatstroke in 1:06.52. She combined with Ivanna Andrews, Karolyn Sundberg, and Jess Trupiano to win the 200 Individual Medley Relay in 1:56.71. She and Andrews also combined with Lauren Kowalski and Kelsi-Mariah Oresman to win the 200 Freestyle Relay in 1:44.79.

Oresman finished second in the 200 Freestyle to get the Lady Rams going in the individual events. Sundberg finished 8th in the 200 IM to go along with Pettibone's 1st place. Andrews picked up a 2nd place in the 100 Butterfly, with Susanne Tucker getting an 8th place.

Oresman came back with a 3rd place, and Kowalski an 8th place in the 100 Freestyle. Oresman, a four year star for the Lady Rams, had a remarkable meet for the state champions considering she had a cast on her broken hand for much of the season. She trained with a water-proof cast until she could use a brace or tape. Oresman's gutsy performance is another testament to the great pride these girls take in their team.

Andrews picked up another 2nd place in the 100 Backstoke, with Gianna Jasinski taking an 8th place. Pettione had a lot of support in the 100 Breastoke. Sundberg took a 6th, and Nikki Trupiano finished 8th in the event.

Coach Lenihan had an abundance of confidence in his swimmers prior to the meet, and the girls showed why his confidence was warranted. Saturday's performance continues the great tradition that LaSalle has established in Girls Swimming over the last ten years.
