A legendary figure in athletics and education, O’Grady left an indelible mark at Rhode Island College, LaSalle Academy, and Danbury High School in Connecticut, inspiring generations of students and athletes.

O’Grady began his professional career in 1933, becoming Rhode Island College’s first athletic director while still a student, developing and coaching the college’s baseball and track programs. During his decade at the college, he also led St. Patrick’s Junior High School to 10 basketball titles. An Eagle Scout, he served as a longtime scoutmaster for Henry Barnard School and held leadership roles at Camp Yawgoog, including campmaster and divisional director.

From 1943 to 1950, O’Grady served as Director of Physical Education for Men at LaSalle Academy, coaching basketball, track, and cross country. His basketball teams won three state titles, and his cross country and track teams were undefeated for eight years, claiming 16 consecutive Rhode Island championships, six New England crowns, and five Eastern team titles. Following this, he spent 29 years at Danbury High School, coaching multiple sports and developing honors programs in English and American Studies. In recognition of his achievements, Danbury High School named its all-weather track in his honor, and he was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the FCIAC Hall of Fame.

Throughout his career, O’Grady emphasized the development of his students above trophies and accolades. More than 50 of his former athletes became coaches themselves, reflecting the lasting influence of his mentorship. He retired with an 84.4 percent coaching win record and was honored with numerous awards, including induction into the Rhode Island College Hall of Fame, the Rhode Island Hall of Fame for track and basketball, the St. Patrick’s CYO Hall of Fame, and the CIAC Citation for Distinguished Service.
