LA SALLE CELEBRATES CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

We focus the activities of this week on the theme of the Lasallian Tercentenary---Our Lasallian Vocations.

During the week of January 27-February 2 La Salle Academy is celebrating the national Catholic Schools Week---an occasion to celebrate and proclaim our Catholic and Lasallian identity.  Together we "learn, serve, lead, and succeed" as committed Lasallians.  A number of actitives are planned for this week---daily focused Morning Prayers by La Salle alums and parents, a drive in middle school and high school homerooms for school supplies to benefit our sister Catholic schools (Bishop McVinney and Blessed Sacrament Schools in Providence), delivering trays of cookies to local Catholic elementary schools that our students had attended, Founder's Day to recognize our teachers, the high school Science Fair, special middle school events (including helping at the Saint Charles Borromeo Food Kitchen) and some special treats at the end of the week for high school and middle school faculty and staff.

Monday:  Students were greeted by a sign announcing Catholic Schools Week as they came in the main entrance and stairway (with Saint John Baptist de La Salle looking over them and the banner).  The special morning prayer was offered by Megan Carey (a current teacher, alumna, and mother of a future alum!).

Tuesday: A La Salle parent offered the morning prayer today over the public address system.

Wednesday: Today marks a series of events as we celebrate Founder's Day.  Although May 15th is the official feast day of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, we have had a celebration during Catholic Schools Week each year so to honor our teachers, staff, counselors, and coaches.  In a special way during this Tercentenary Year (A Year of Lasallian Vocations), we recognize all our Lasallian educators and, in a special way, our Distinguished Lasallian Educator of the Year--Director of Campus Ministry, Christine Bridges Estes.  Faculty and staff were greeted this morning by members of the Lasallian Ministry Team as they signed into school with a "Happy Founder's Day!", a letter of gratitude, and a small gift.  This morning's prayer on the public address system by an alumna and current Campus Minister highlighted Mrs. Estes.  The Lasallian Ministry Team visited one of Mrs. Estes' classes to present her the award and later in the day, after school, repeated the presentation in front of her family, friends, invited guests, and the entire faculty and staff of La Salle.  Also recognized during that ceremony were all Distinguished Lasallian Educators of past years.
In addition, Brother Arturo, a Mexican Brother whose ministry this year is Vocation Promotion in the District of Eastern North America, had the first few of eight presentations to De La Salle Middle School students.  They too share in the Year of Lasallian Vocations!

Thursday:  Morning Prayer was offered by a long-time teacher, alum and parent of 5 alums!  High school students ventured out in the cold to deliver trays of cookies to their Catholic elementary schools, and middle school students out to work in the soup kitchen of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Providence--they are also distributing blankets to the guests (appropriate on this frigid day!).  La Salle and De La Salle students are sharing their gifts today and continuing the tradition spoken of in today's prayer.

Friday: A young alumnus shared the benefits of a Catholic, Lasallian education in his powerful morning prayer.  Taking up the theme for this day of Catholic Schools Week (Celebrating Faculty, Staff and Volunteers), High school teachers had tasty cupcake treats provided by students through Campus Ministry and Middle school teachers had a pot-luck lunch supplied by parents.  Judges and upperclassmen viewed the "finalist" Science Fair projects.  It was a great way to end the week.

Catholic Schools Week 2019 was certainly a special way to celebrate the Lasallian Tercentenary and our Catholic and Lasallian identity!
