STUDENTS ON SERVICE IMMERSION TRIP

During the week of June 17 nine students and two teachers spent a week of service in Florida.

La Salle Academy students spent the week on a service immersion trip to Hope Community Center in Apopka, Florida---such an important time to go beyond our own borders, to form relationships, and to hear immigration stories.

On two days they worked with  members of the community in a local nursery, reflected on the power of each person’s story (including a story from a DACA young lady), and then were invited to eat dinner with families in Apopka who opened their homes to them.

On another day the students helped at Summer camp, then spent the evening with local families as they opened their homes to the group for dinner. The hospitality and generosity was not lost on the students. Given all of the legitimate reasons the migrants have to be apprehensive and afraid, they trusted the group, and shared their homes, food, families, and stories.

On the van ride home, one student commented, “It is so humbling—how little I knew.”

La Salle Academy students experienced a glimpse of God’s kingdom this week. We all have something to contribute to the human family; we all carry brokenness and need. But the journey is meant to be traveled together.

La Salle Academy is a high school rich in history and grounded in the person and teachings of Jesus and the Catholic faith, which are core to the school's life and culture. The De La Salle Middle School provides a strong holistic foundation for students to transition into high school. The high school and middle school provide students of diverse ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds, a community to foster growth in the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle’s ideals of faith, service, and community.
