LADY RAMS REPEAT AS STATE HOCKEY CHAMPIONS

The La Salle Girls Ice Hockey team captured their second consecutive RIIL State Championship behind Senior Captain Arianna Bosica's hat trick. The Lady Rams defeated the East Bay High Schools Co-op team 5-2 in game three to bring home their fourth title in the past five years.

The girls had to wait a few extra days to find out who they were playing after the Warwick High Schools Co-op team had to forfeit their place in the finals only hours before the game was supposed to begin. The East Bay High Schools Co-op team, who finished in first place during the regular season, is made up of students from Barrington, Portsmouth, and Mount Hope High Schools. They were eliminated in the semifinals by Warwick, but earned the berth in the finals after Warwick bowed out. East Bay came to play once they knew they were in.

Game 1 went into overtime before Boscia, the tournament's MVP, found the back of the net to give La Salle a one game lead. The final score was 4-3.

Game 2 was a classic playoff game, with East Bay scoring late in the third period to grab the 1-0 win. The La Salle girls were relentless in the final minutes, hitting the post with just under a minute to go. Freshman Kaitlyn Oatley had several big saves to keep the game scoreless before East Bay finally beat her. It was a tough game to lose for the Lady Rams, but it was exciting hockey.

On Thursday night, Boscia made sure the excitement would go in La Salle's favor. She fired off a great goal to give the Lady Rams a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. Boscia and Jillian Egan did the dirty work and fed Emily Duffy who scored on a pretty shot for La Salle's second goal. Boscia made it 3-1 with a goal in the second period on assists from Egan and Zoe Korzeniowski. East Bay would not go away and made it 3-2 with a goal in the second period.

The third and deciding period saw the girls take their 3-2 lead and withstand a pretty good rally by East Bay. Oatley, who finished with 25 saves, denied the Eagles from getting into the net. Jamie Comeau, who was outstanding the entire series on defense, made sure that Oatley had clear looks all period. Comeau used her speed and stick skills to keep possession of the puck with La Salle.

Boscia finally gave the Maroon and White faithful some relief with her third goal nearly twelve minutes into the period. Allison Altshuler had the assist, and then added the cherry for the sundae with an empty netter with just over a minute to go. At that point, it was just a matter of waiting for the celebration.

For the Class of 2016, it was their fourth consecutive trip to the finals, and their third RIIL State Championship.
