La Salle Academy offers 30 different Varsity Sports for students, as well as many Junior Varsity and Freshman teams. La Salle is a charter member of the
Rhode Island Interscholastic League and competes within the framework of the RIIL as well as competing against out of state teams.
The Athletic Program at La Salle is situated within the overall mission of the school. As such, it is an excellent means of teaching the students a deep understanding of what it means to live out each day the message of Christ.
Athletics provide opportunities for training, physical conditioning, and healthy competition in which students can develop their physical talents as well as their mental prowess in strategy and in the intricacies of the sport. Athletics can help the student learn how to function effectively in and to make a positive contribution by encouraging responsibility, by fostering persistent effort, and by promoting self-awareness.
For the third year in a row, the La Salle Academy and North Smithfield High School Girls Ice Hockey teams battled for the title in the RIIL's Division State Championship; and for the second year in a row, the Lady Rams took the title. After winning 5-4 on Sunday night, the teams once again played a close and highly entertaining game with La Salle winning 4-3 on a late goal by Freshman Lauren Abbenante.
In a Providence Journal story by Carolyn Thornton it was announced that La Salle track and cross-country coach Kelly Martin and Barrington senior Hillary Anderson will be honored at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Girls and Women in Sports Celebration, which will be held March 13 at noon prior to the three girls finals of the Credit Union Basketball Championships at the Ryan Center in Kingston.
The organization has named Martin the 2009 Alice A. Sullivan Rhode Island Interscholastic League Female Coach of the Year and Anderson the 2009 Virginia L. “Gini” Duarte Female Athlete of the Year.
